Summary

The island watched and wept…

In search of a new life, sixteen-year-old Adriana Clark’s family moves to the ancient, ocean-battered Isle of Mull, far off the coast of Scotland。 Then she goes missing。 Faced with hostile locals and indifferent police, her desperate parents turn to private investigator Sadie Levesque。

Sadie is the best at what she does。 But when she finds Adriana’s body in a cliffside cave, a seaweed crown carefully arranged on her head, she knows she’s dealing with something she’s never encountered before。

The deeper she digs into the island’s secrets, the closer danger creeps – and the more urgent her quest to find the killer grows。 Because what if Adriana is not the last girl to die?

I’ve probably sold it to you already, I know, but I guess I’d better expand a little on what makes it so amazing – readers seem to expect it!Set on the Isle of Mull, or a fictitious version of Mull as the author points out at the end, Canadian investigator Sadie Levesque has been called in to find a missing teenage girl after the police seem to be ignoring her parents’ concerns。 When Sadie finds the girl’s body, the locals close ranks against the outsiders and Sadie’s task becomes very difficult。 However, she continues to dig away at the island’s secrets, under covering a web of myths and legends and whispers of the supernatural。I’m sure by now I have your interest piqued and I can tell you that, should you buy a copy of the book, your investment will be well rewarded with the heart-stopping story that you won’t be able to put down and will chill you to your marrow。 Weaving crime, mystery horror and the paranormal, it is the perfect story to lose yourself in on a dark, autumn evening。 I devoured it in a single sitting because I could not tear myself away from the page and I was surprised and intrigued until the very last page。 The ending was shocking and unexpected and left me in awe of what the author was prepared to do in honour of her story and I can honestly say this is a writer at the peak of her craft。As well as the great thriller plot and the supernatural elements – this book has more than a whiff of The Wicker Man about it, which is a great compliment coming from me as I adore that film – it addresses issues which are very pertinent to modern discourse。 Issues of femininity, female power and independence, the idea of labelling women to keep them down, gender conflict and roles and sexual violence。 Many of the ideas in this book spoke to me, as a woman, a sister, a daughter and a mother of teenage girls and it was very thought-provoking in the light of happenings over the past few years across the world。Beautiful and evocative scene-setting too。 Makes you want to travel to Mull, in spite of the plot!I can’t recommend this book highly enough, it is one of my favourite reads of the year so far and i will definitely be buying a physical copy to add to my library for a future reread。 It is the kind of book I will recommend on Twitter and buy for my friends who I know appreciate a great read。 My favourite of this author’s books so far。 Buy it today。 You can get it in all formats here。 。。。more

Another superb book from Helen。 Haunting and atmospheric throughout with a good range of characters, and an intriguing story。 Not a page turner but then again I don’t think it needs to be。 Some lovely prose and the last few chapters are beautifully written。

Even now days later I can still feel the chills。 Adriana has gone missing from her family home on the Isle of Mull。 The family are American and due to the police not taking the case seriously they have hired a Canadan private investigator Sadie Levesque to search for their daughter。 Sadie is good at her job and when she finds Adriana’s body in a cave wearing a seaweed crown she knows there is something very wrong on Mull。 She is now searching for a murderer! Oh my gosh, how I fell for Sadie as a character! Determined to do the right thing no matter what the cost。 Such a unique character in that she specifically searches for lost teenagers。 Yes, she was reckless sometimes in her actions but her motives were true。 THAT ENDING - oft I was not expecting that at all。 I loved that there were nods to Helen’s Luc Callanach series with two crossover characters。 Not going to say who as it's a lovely surprise when they turn up! I also loved all the references to the myths and history of Mull。 I'm Scottish and didn't even know about the ship sunk just off the island! It caused much googling I can tell you。 This is an outstanding standalone novel from Helen and I adored my time in Sadie’s world。 I can't do justice to this book as it was fantastic。 Let me know if you read it! 。。。more

This is my third Helen Fields book and as per usual it’s great。 Fast paced, more twists and turns , red herrings, mythology and witches。 I mean it sounds crazy but it’s so enjoyable! It is very gory though and the ending is 😱

Oh wow。 I'll avoid any spoilers, but it left me simply stunned。 So bold and powerful。A fantastic novel, full of twists and turns with some important things to say。 。。。more

With The Last Girl to Die, Helen Fields takes a small town setting, legends and folklore to craft a story about the tragic death of a young outsider and the PI who is tasked with finding out what happened to her。Sadie Levesque is a Canadian, brought to Mull by the missing girl's family to try and find her。 Find her she does, but she's dead in a cave and there are some things with her body that are disturbing。 From there it's a question of who to trust, who isn't what they seem, and as Sadie find With The Last Girl to Die, Helen Fields takes a small town setting, legends and folklore to craft a story about the tragic death of a young outsider and the PI who is tasked with finding out what happened to her。Sadie Levesque is a Canadian, brought to Mull by the missing girl's family to try and find her。 Find her she does, but she's dead in a cave and there are some things with her body that are disturbing。 From there it's a question of who to trust, who isn't what they seem, and as Sadie finds out more about the island's past, simply a question of why?Sadie, telling the story in the first person, was not the easiest character to take to and her role as a private investigator basically meant sniffing around in other people's business and being extremely reckless which felt a little hard to get behind at times。 She did grow on me as the story progressed though and there's no doubt she was an extremely brave and strong heroine。 It got to the point where I didn't want to put this book down, so engrossed was I in the investigation that Sadie was conducting, and the situations she was putting herself in which almost had me wanting to read through my fingers。 There are plenty of red herrings in this story and I didn't see the outcome until it was right in front of me。 Fields is an immaculate plotter and always manages to keep me guessing。 The overall ending was definitely unexpected!I loved the fact that a few characters from Fields' other books featured in this one。 It gave it a kind of authenticity, in a way almost like it was a real-life scenario。 I'm always glad to come across such great characters。 I also really liked the Scottish island setting, one of my favourite settings to read about in fiction。 The whole suspicious community feel was so strong, coupled that with the superstition that abounded there, that I could easily imagine eyes following Sadie everywhere she went, speculating about her sticking her nose in where it wasn't wanted。Whilst The Last Girl to Die felt slightly different to this author's other books, I really enjoyed it and found it a riveting and gruesome (trademark Fields) read, full of twists and turns and excitement galore。 。。。more

The Last Girl to Die is a chilling thriller set in a small town in Scotland。 When sixteen-year-old Adriana Clark goes missing, her family hires a private investigator from Canada named Sadie Levesque to search for her。 In a matter of days, Sadie discovers Adriana’s brutally murdered body in a dark cave。 The more Sadie investigates, the more hostility she feels and the sense that everyone is hiding something, including the police and the family that hired her。 This atmospheric thriller primarily The Last Girl to Die is a chilling thriller set in a small town in Scotland。 When sixteen-year-old Adriana Clark goes missing, her family hires a private investigator from Canada named Sadie Levesque to search for her。 In a matter of days, Sadie discovers Adriana’s brutally murdered body in a dark cave。 The more Sadie investigates, the more hostility she feels and the sense that everyone is hiding something, including the police and the family that hired her。 This atmospheric thriller primarily follows Sadie’s pov。 The author seamlessly weaved Scotland’s ritualistic/spiritual history into this contemporary narrative。 A word of warning that there are very graphic and gruesome descriptions early on in this story。 It almost put me off, but I decided to push through, and it wasn’t so bad after that。 The writing was good, and I enjoyed Sadie’s characterization, even though she made a few hasty decisions。 And that ending! It wasn’t what I was expecting, but should have guessed was coming。 And it did fit with the rest of the story。 Thank you to Avon Books for providing me with an arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 https://booksandwheels。com 。。。more

BRILLIANT!! It's because of storytelling like this that Helen Fields is one of my top female authors! I will pick up a book of hers without even reading the synopsis because I know it will be brilliant! She never disappoints。 I was pulled in from the go and spat out exhausted at the end! This is another humdinger set in one of my favourite places, Scotland。 It is set on the Isle of Mull where there are a lot of undercurrents and where people are still practice old beliefs。 A young American girl BRILLIANT!! Who can she trust and what is up with the family who hired her? I definitely did not see this ending coming! WOW!!!! It started off as a pleasant read as Sadie a private investigator flies in from Canada to help find a missing teenager on Mull。 It progressed into a four star read then an ultimate FIVE STARS!!! Twisty Turny whodunnit to perfection。 Thank you Netgalley & Helen Fields for an advanced copy of this book。 I certainly never give high scores when a book doesn’t deserve them & just because I got it for free。 This however definitely deserves it。

Wow! This was absolutely ram packed with twists, and lots of shocking parts! Really creepy, and an excellent story。Sadie arrives on a remote Scottish Island, hired to find a 16 year old girl who has gone missing。 She soon finds her body, but the way she has been slayed is horrific! Is she the last girl to die?
